Black Mirror - First Season

Llevo queriendo hablaros de Black Mirror desde que me vi la primera temporada, ya que como a todos, me dejó impresionada. Para los que aún no sepáis de qué os hablo, Black Mirror es la nueva serie de la mano de Charlie Brooker, cuyo formato es bastante peculiar, ya que la trama, personajes e incluso actores de cada episodio son completamente diferentes. En cada capítulo, Brooker nos plantea una nueva situación de lo que podría llegar a ser nuestro futuro, para luego dejarnos boquiabiertos, con la pregunta de "¿realmente podríamos llegar a esto?" entre los labios.

I have wanted to write about Black Mirror since I watched the first season, since as it did with every one else, it left me shocked. For those of you who don't know what am I talking about, Black Mirror is the new tv series of Charlie Brooker, with a peculiar format, 'cause the plot, characters and even actors are different in every episode. In every episode, Brooker sets a situation that could be possible in a near future, and leaves us shocked with the question "can we really finish like this?" in our minds. 

El título de Black Mirror es cuanto menos curioso, y el mismo Charlie Brooker explicó en su columna de The Guardian el significado: "Si la tecnología es una droga - y desde luego lo parece - entonces cuales son los efectos colaterales? Es en esta área - justo entre el deleite y el malestar - donde Black Mirror, mi nueva serie, está planteada. El "espejo negro" del título es el aquel que encontrarás en cada pared, en cada mesa o en la palma de cada mano: la fría y reluciente pantalla de una televisión, un ordenador o un smartphone". 

The title of Black Mirror is quite curious, and Charlie Brooker himself explained it in his column at The Guardian: "If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side-effects? This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set. The "black mirror" of the title is the one you'll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone."

Pues bien, hasta el momento han salido 6 episodios divididos en dos temporadas, cada uno de una hora de duración. ¿Hablamos un poquito de la trama de cada uno de la primera temporada - y otro día continuaré con la segunda - ?

Well, till the moment there have been released 6 episodes of one hour each divided in two season. What if we talk a little bit of each of the episodes of the first season - and another day I'll do the same with the second, promised - ?

En el 1x01 "The National Anthem" nos encontramos con el Primer Ministro, al que le ponen en una situación peliaguda al informarle de que la querida princesa ha sido secuestrada. ¿Y qué piden para el rescate? La emisión en directo del Primer Ministro tirándose a un cerdo. Curioso cuanto menos, especialmente ver cómo va cambiando la opinión de la gente a medida que avanzan las horas, cómo va cambiando el Primer Ministro y cómo lo harías tu si estuvieras en la situación. 

In the S01E01 "The National Anthem", we see the Prime Minister who is woken up at 4 o'clock in the morning with the breaking news that the Princess has been kidnapped. And what does the captor want? The live broadcast of the Prime Minister... fucking a pig. Yes, not kidding. It is curious to see how the audience's opinion change as the hours go by, how the Prime Minister changes and how you'll do if you were in the situation. 

[SPOILER ALERT] Al final del episodio nos encontramos con que la princesa había sido soltada media hora antes de que comenzara el espectáculo, pero claro, todo el mundo estaba pendiente de la televisión y nadie se había dado cuenta, pero la situación podía haber sido evitada. Esto nos hace plantearnos si de verdad sucedería de esta manera, si somos tan morbosos como para quedarnos durante hora y media viendo como el Primer Ministro se tira a un cerdo. Y por desgracia, la respuesta es sí, lo somos.

[SPOILER ALERT] At the end of the episode we find that the Princess had been released half an hour before the "show" started, but anyone had realized it 'cause everybody was watching the tv, so the situation could have been avoided. This makes us think if it will really happen this way, if we are that morbid to watch the Primer Minister suffering while he's fucking a pig. And the answer is yes, we are. 

En el 1x02, "15 Million Merits", nos encontramos una situación mezcla de Gran Hermano y 1984, en la que la única meta del ser humano es pedalear, para conseguir puntos y conseguir una entrada a un programa de televisión del estilo de "Factor X", y que de ser elegidos es lo único que los sacará de las vidas que tienen. El protagonista parece ser el único en contra de este sistema, y su único objetivo se convierte en conseguir los puntos para ir al programa y despotricar acerca de todo y todos.

In the S01E02, "15 Million Merits", the main plot is a situation mix of the Big Brother and 1984, in which the only objective of each individual is to cycle to get enough points ("merits") to enter in a tv show similar to "X Factor", which is the only way out of their lives. The main character seems to be the only one that doesn't agree with the system, and his only objective becomes to get the 15 million merits to enter the tv show and rant about everyone and everything.

Por mucho que me gustase el libro de 1984, no creo que este sea el mejor capítulo de Black Mirror. [SPOILER ALERT] El final, con el protagonista conformándose con la nueva vida que le han dado y olvidando de dónde viene y todas las quejas que tenía acerca de esta sociedad, te deja tan insatisfecho como el final de 1984, pero a la vez te hace ver que es nuestro final más probable - desgraciadamente -.

As much as I liked the 1984 book, I think this is the worst episode of the first season of Black Mirror. [SPOILER ALERT] At the end, the main character adapts to the new life he gets after entering the show, forgetting where he came from and all the complaints and hate he had. It leaves you as unsatisfied as the end of 1984, but unfortunately, we gotta admit it's the most probable ending for us. 

En el 1x03, "The Entire History of You", todos tenemos implantando un "grano", que básicamente es un chip capaz de grabar y reproducir todo lo que vemos. Que gran ventaja, ¿verdad? Podemos analizar y volver a ver todos nuestros recuerdos... O quizás no sea tan ventajoso, y esto es lo que nos plantea Brooker con una pareja, un marido celoso y una mujer infiel, y el mal uso que podríamos darle a esta grabadora que guarda cada instante de nuestra vida. 

In the S01E03 "The Entire History of You", we all have this grain implanted in the brain, which enables us to record all we see, so after we can reproduce it. What an advantage, right? Being able to watch again all your memories... Or maybe it isn't, and this is what Brooker shows us with the story of a marriage, with a jealous husband and a unfaithful wife, and the bad use we would give to this advance that records every fucking instant of our lives. 

Posiblemente este sea el episodio que más me gustó de la primera temporada, porque es curioso que no estamos tan lejos de tener algo así. Y eso es lo genial de Black Mirror, que nos plantea un futuro y al principio pensamos "Venga ya, imposible", pero realmente ¿por qué debería serlo? Con los avances en la tecnología y los retrocesos en la sociedad, es solo cuestión de tiempo que uno de sus episodios se haga realidad. 

It might be the best episode of the season, and it is curious to see that we are not that far away of the situation. And this is what makes Black Mirror great, that it shows us a future and at the beginning we say "Come on, that's impossible", but is it? With the progress of technology and the setbacks of society, it's just a matter of time before any of the situations of Black Mirror's episode become our day life.
